Position Summary

The Veterinary Technician plays a vital role in supporting veterinarians by providing medical care to small animals, assisting with examinations and surgical procedures, educating pet owners, and maintaining accurate medical records. The ideal candidate is compassionate, detail-oriented, and committed to delivering exceptional patient care and client service.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Assist veterinarians during examinations, treatments, and medical procedures.

  • Obtain and record patient histories, vital signs, and physical observations.

  • Administer medications, vaccines, and treatments as prescribed by the veterinarian.

  • Collect blood, urine, fecal, and other diagnostic samples.

  • Perform laboratory testing and accurately record results.

  • Monitor hospitalized patients and report changes in condition.

Surgical Assistance

  • Prepare patients for surgery, including pre-operative testing and anesthesia setup.

  • Assist during surgical procedures by monitoring anesthesia and patient vital signs.

  • Maintain sterile surgical environments and equipment.

  • Provide post-operative care and patient monitoring.

Client Communication

  • Educate pet owners on preventive healthcare, nutrition, medications, and post-treatment care.

  • Explain treatment plans, procedures, and home care instructions.

  • Answer client questions and provide compassionate support regarding their pets' health.

Facility and Equipment Maintenance

  • Clean, disinfect, and maintain examination rooms, treatment areas, and kennels.

  • Ensure medical equipment is properly maintained and functioning.

  • Maintain inventory of medications, medical supplies, and laboratory materials.

Record Keeping

  • Accurately document patient treatments, medications, diagnostic results, and communications.

  • Maintain confidentiality of patient and client information.

  • Ensure medical records comply with clinic policies and veterinary regulations.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Veterinary Technology preferred.

  • Credentialed Veterinary Technician (CVT, RVT, or LVT) preferred but not required.

  • Previous experience in a veterinary clinic or animal care setting preferred.

  • Knowledge of animal handling, restraint techniques, and veterinary terminology.

  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.

Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational abilities.

  • Ability to multitask and prioritize responsibilities.

  • Compassion for animals and their owners.

  • Proficiency with veterinary practice management software and basic computer applications.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry animals weighing up to 50 pounds, with assistance for larger animals.

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and kneel for extended periods.

  • Ability to safely restrain animals of various sizes and temperaments.

  • Must be comfortable working around animal dander, odors, and bodily fluids.

Work Environment

  • Exposure to animals that may be stressed, ill, or injured.

  • Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases, chemicals, and medical waste.

  • May require occasional evening, weekend, or holiday shifts.
